Silambarasan has again proved that he is no mere flash in the pan, with this film Thotti Jaya. After proving his provice in Manmadhan, Simbu has performed an energetic and angry young man’s role in Thotti Jaya with much ease.
It has often been proved in the Tamil film industry that it is a deft screenplay and an interesting narration which can make a film click, even if the story is the run-of-the-mill kind. This film proves the belief just right. The speedy narration by director Durai makes one overlook the clich?d storyline.
The thug Thotti Jaya (Silambarasan), who works for the don Seena Thana (Pradeep Rawath), goes to hiding in Kolkata to escape a murder case. He sees Brindha (Gopika), who is trapped in the hands of some anti-socials when she is on a tour from Kanyakumari to Kolkata and he saves her from their clutches.
The insecure Brindha requests Thotti Jaya to accompany her back home. Slowly but surely, she develops a liking towards him. Thotti Jaya also falls for her. As is the convention in Tamil films, she happens to be the daughter of Seena Thana! Seena Thana sends his men to eliminate Thotti Jaya, after he comes to know of his daughter?s feelings towards him.
The rest is, as anyone can suppose, about how Thotti Jaya disappoints Seena Thana and gets united with Brindha.
One striking quality about Silambarasan is his energy. He seems to carry the role with ease and vibrancy, in spite of not having a tough physique or the rugged looks necessary to play a thug. He is too young to play this kind of a role, and yet he is absolutely credible as a thug. Gopika is a perfect foil to him; she is at her best and looks stunning too.
Pradeep Rawath who plays the villain is sometimes too noisy and it gets on one?s nerves.
Harris Jeyaraj has done a neat job. This film will sustain the name he has got after the success of Anniyan?s music. R. D. Rajasekhar’s brilliance with the camera has always been undisputable. His cinematography combined with Anthony’s racy editing add to the glitz of the movie. No wonder Antony is much sought after, he does deliver super-fast!
The supporting cast includes V. M. C. Haneefa, Vadivukkarasi and Sadhana among the others.
Durai has given us a memorable movie called Mugavari earlier. This film, which he has directed after a lull will definitely stand him in good stead.
