This is Makkal Thilagam MGR’s first movie as Hero. This movie is the big breakthrough in MGR’s career.
This movie was released in the same year as India’s Independence and was the second best grosser next to Gemini Studios’s all time hit Chandralekha. After elevated as a Hero, MGR mentions in his autobiography that 24 hours in a day is not sufficient for his schedule. Most of his films turned out as a Box Office grosser, MGR at the time was also called as Minimum Guarantee Ramachandran.
Kalainggar Karunanidhi screenplays this movie. MGR’s first playback was in this movie by MM Mariappa, a relation of MGR. It is also said that this is the first playback song in Tamil.
